Psoriasis: Diet attempt

Psoriasis and Diet

I’ve been wanting to start up my attempt to cure psoriasis through dieting again now that I’m finally moved out of home and can really monitor what I eat and can cook foods that are hopefully appropriate.

I’ve done a fair amount of reading and Googling things on the internet. I’m not purchasing any books yet as it seems what works for one may not work for another when it comes to psoriasis. I’m just taking into consideration all the things I am reading and working everything together and while some have conflicting views on good versus bad food choices there do seem to be a general consensus with some things; such as no dairy, no nightshade vegetables, limit/eliminate gluten, no red meats, no alcohol, no caffeine, no processed sugars, limit saturated fats. I’ve also noticed chilli, wasabi, soy milk, and bamboo wreak havoc on my system and cause instant flare-ups, so those are also out of the equation.

Now, the things I’ve learnt. I’ve read a lot of the threads from Inspire and there’s been a lot of mention about Dr. Pagano’s Healing Psoriasis: The Natural Alternative so I went ahead and did a little reading about that. One of the stranger things I’ve come across while researching, though unrelated to diet is Listerine for Psoriasis, where people have been able to cure, or at least significantly diminish appearance of, psoriasis! Since it is also effective against dandruff, I may ask someone, who only suffers from dandruff, to try this and see if there are any improvements before attempting this on my own.
I suspect I may be missing or lacking in some key nutrients as I’ve attempted to cut out junk food and snacks between meals, so I read others’ solutions to that, and it seems adding back helpful fats such as evening primrose oil, flaxseed oil, and fish oil were the way to go. I also came across an interesting Yahoo Answers: here, which entails a pretty strict diet.

So, armed with all those and more I’ve decided that it was finally time to give this diet shenanigans another shot! And here’s what I’ve boiled it down to for the next month or two..or three to see if I notice any improvements.

The usual no-no’s

  • red meats (beef, pork, duck, lamb)
  • nightshades (tomato, potato, peppers [black pepper ok], eggplant, goji)
  • junk food and fast foods
  • coconut and palm oils
  • caffeine
  • alcohol
  • shellfish
  • bamboo
  • soy milk. Stay the heck away from soy milk

Things to limit (some are because I’m not sure I could live without them)

  • sugars (goodbye beautiful chocolate. D:)
  • products with white flour
  • white rice (the Asian is strong in this one)
  • Dairy

The good stuff

  • lots of water
  • poultry and fish
  • vegetables
  • fruits (except for citrus and berries [blueberries ok])
  • herbal teas (Camomile, Slippery Elm Bark, Rooibos, I’m chucking in green tea too)
  • Alkalising foods
  • probiotics
  • flaxseed

It’s going to be tough, but I’m attempting to stick to this as closely as I can.
Well, with all that variety in my diet, I have to be able to come up with some interesting things to keep me going for at least a month, hopefully longer. Let’s see how I go.
